THE IMPORTANCE OF SPACE
An Edited Book by Tamie Glass and Lindsay Graham
THE IMPORTANCE
OF SPACE
SPACE MATTERS
THIS EDITED PUBLICATION ADDRESSES THREE CRITICAL SPACE MATTERS IN EQUAL MEASURE. EXPERT PERSPECTIVES FROM A RANGE OF SCIENTIFIC AND CREATIVE FIELDS TEACH US HOW PEOPLE EXPERIENCE PHYSICAL SPACES, WHAT OUR ETHICAL OBLIGATIONS ARE WITH REGARD TO SPACES, AND HOW SPACES IMPACT OUR HEALTH AND WELLBEING.
01 / EXPERIENCE
The experiences one encounters each day do not occur in a silo—these experiences exist within a situated spatial condition. Individuals consciously and unconsciously select and craft spaces that support and hinder their daily lives. Further, architects and designers curate environments to influence the experiences a person seeks and encounters. This section explores the ways spaces can enhance the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors of occupants.
02 / ETHICS
The relationships people form with their surrounding environments are significant, intimate, influential, and often reveal details of a person’s life. Because of this impactful relationship, many ethical considerations are essential for practitioners, researchers, and even users of the built environment to consider.
03 / IMPACT
In addition to spaces’ ability to shape the human experience, there is a great deal of discussion on how spaces impact society and the planet as a whole. This section sheds light on some of the ways leaders and prominent organizations within the field have investigated the impact people have on spaces, and that spaces have on people.

LINDSAY T. GRAHAM P.hD.
PSYCHOLOGIST, RESEARCHER, EDUCATOR
Lindsay T. Graham is a personality and social psychologist who specializes in how people craft, select, and shape their daily physical and virtual spaces to best fit their lives. She is the founder and lead of the “Psychology of Space” research program at the Center for the Built Environment (CBE) at the University of California, Berkeley. There she works with industry leaders and researchers around the world to measure and assess occupant behaviors and the effectiveness of spaces in supporting user needs. She is an expert in the measurement of people within virtual and physical spaces and post-occupancy evaluation methods.
